The first (half) year of the Milkmen Ltd. – Embryo Ltd.’s EMBRYO Center

The first (half) year of the Milkmen Ltd. – Embryo Ltd.’s EMBRYO Center

We left behind a busy and at the same time very exciting year in the new EMBRYO Center of Milkmen Ltd.-Embrió Ltd in Paks-Földespuszta (Hungary). The build of the laboratory has been completed, most of the equipment has been procured and the work has begun. All in all, we can say without exaggeration that we have succeeded in creating a very functional, modern and beautiful embryo transfer center. You can read more about the investment here. In addition to the mobile station (Embrio Ltd.), we also applied for and received a permit to run the stable station.

A total of 306 in vivo embryos were recovered from our best Milkmen donors, i.e. by washing. 78% of these were first class. Our average embryo production was 5 embryos/flush, however, there were months when this number approached 8. Our best month in this regard was March, and the weakest was August (we ran a few programs at that time).

Once the embryos were collected, we tried to implant them. Numerically, 227 were transferred to recipients, 94 freshly or the next day, and 133 after freezing-thawing. The “surrogate mothers” were initially just heifers – because embryos stick better in this age of group – but from May we also used first lactating cows for this purpose. Summary of the results is yet to come — after 30 and 60 days of pregnancy — but overall, more than half of the embryo transfers resulted pregnancies. In a few months, we have achieved high pregnancy rates above our expectations, which we wrote about earlier here.

The scientifically accurate and complete data collection of the embryo production and a significant number of transfers allows us to draw certain conclusions in which we can be pioneers in the country.

It is also special that the first embryos in the herd were shocked – even before fresh transfer and freezing, we already have pregnant recipients from these embryos. For shock, we use the equipment of the Applied Cell Technolgy (PTAT method), which, based on research data, increases the cryotolerance of gametes and embryos, i.e., improves the survival of the freezing. The method has not been used in in vivo bovine production. Hopefully this year we will have great amount of data as we can make the method available as a service for the practice.

In addition, preparations have been made for embryo biopsy (you can read more about its purpose here) and other micromanipulation methods.

We have redesigned our website with new and regular content, which already contains up-to-date information in English (as you can read it 😊). Among other things, our donors have been listed, from which embryos can be booked. At the same time, we started building our foreign relations to enter the international market soon. Those interested could also meet us at the Animal Husbandry Exhibition in Hódmezővásárhely.

During autumn, we signed the first equine contract with the Hungarian Coldblood Horse Breeding Association for embryo production and sperm storage. This year we plan to implement several programs with this animal species. What’s more, we look forward to in vivo and in vitro embryo production as we are technically and manually ready to perform ICSI. With this method, we also provide domestic horse breeders with the opportunity to produce and transfer in vitro equine embryos in Hungary.

In October we attended again at the 2021 AETA-CETA/ACTE Joint Annual Virtual Convention, where a wealth of practical results were presented on a wide range of topics, which will also help us determine further directions.

By the end of the year, we were able to safely offer embryos from our own genome-tested Milkmen heifers and cows – even with fresh tranfser in Hungary, and frozen abroad. In addition, we can reliably perform an embryo program for any cattle owner in their own herd. Donor housing will be available soon. In this way, the owner has the opportunity to entrust us with the more “hard-working” parts (superovulation, fertilization, flushing) in order to produce as many embryos as possible.

Our detailed results so far are completely public for prospective clients, even to the desired depth. Our administration is over-scrupulous and up to date. Interested professionals are welcome at the EMBRYO Center in Paks, and we will have specific open days this year. After pre-registration, you can see a complete ET program – how we flush, search, freeze and transfer the embryos.

We are also planning to open our facility in a ceremonial setting.

This year will be full of similar challenges. On the one hand, we are continuing the work we have started. In vitro production of bovine embryos and their incorporation into our daily routine may also begin soon. With the appropriate results, the method will also be available as a service in cattle and equine species. We hope to have a lot of positive experience in both in vivo and in vitro embryo biopsy this year.

Aladdin embryos with 90% pregnancy rate in summer!

Aladdin embryos with 90% pregnancy rate in summer!

It is not uncommon in bovine embryo transfer that three of the 4 embryos from a donor, two of the 3 embryos, or even two of the 2 embryos resulting pregnancy. However, as the number of embryos transfered from a given donor increases, the PR% will approach the average (roughly 50-60%). Fortunately, this is not the case with us now.

On June 30, 2021, we flushed embryos for the second time from the (then) most valuable donor of Milkmen Ltd. She is 8123 with 2851 GTPI from the Vilma cow family. The donor bull was Aladdin, whose conventional (non-sexed) semen received a total of 3 straws as part of the ABS pre-release program. Aladdin is an A2/A2 bull with a high NM$ and CM$. In the USA he has already 8 sons and 5 daughters on the lists who have crossed the 3,000 tpi “dream limit”.

After the flush 10 first class embryos were found under the microscope. This result is considered good, although not outstanding.

6 embryos were freshly transfered that day into heifer recipients and then 3 embryos the next morning into cows. The remaining 1 was frozen for later transfer.

During the pregnancy diagnosis, pregnancy was established in 5 case in heifers and in all cases in cows It means that 8 of the 9 freshly transfered embryos resulted pregnancies. Given that it was already very hot, this is a particularly good result.

Our PR% in spring and summer has also been generally great – 83.3% from frozen embryos transfered into heifers in May and 80% from fresh ones transfered in June. The pregnancy rate achieved with heifer recipients (fresh and frozen embryos) was 73.9% in May and June, and all of our freshly transfered embryos resulted pregnancy in July.

Update: Recipient receiving frozen Aladdin embryo is also pregnant. Thus, we have 9 pregnancies out of 10 embryos from the program and we are very much looking forward to what offspring will be born from this mating.

Another update on the topic: The next flush of the donor on September 1, 2021, we collected 7 first-class embryos, which, when freshly tranferred, resulted 6 pregnancies. So we produced 15 pregnancies within 3 months from the heifer using the embryo programs.

Last update: 7 heifer and 2 bull calf was born in March and April 2022 from the flush (8123 x Aladdin). Photo of them can be seen under this post.

Our new EMBRYO Center is established

Our new EMBRYO Center is established

A tender investment and a dream come true: the development of our new EMBRYO Center has been completed at our farm, at Milkmen Kft. in Paks-Földespuszta. This project could have happened with the support of VP3-16.1.1.-4.1.5.-4.2.1.-4.2.2.-8.1.1.-8.2.1.-8.3.1.-8.5.1.-8.5.2.-8.6.1.-17.

Embryos are processed in two rooms in the modern facility. In the larger laboratory, in vivo embryos are searched, graded, prepared for transfer and freezed. In the smaller room for the in vitro embryo production we installed a Nikon Ti2 inverted microscope equipped with a Narishige micromanipulator and a Lykos laser system. It will be suitable for embryo biopsy, splitting and will also help to work with in vitro embryos.

As a continuation of the laboratory, there is a hall in the building in which we have installed a stock that meets the requirements of animal welfare, labour protection, hygiene and ergonomics.

Our team is formed, we have already started working at the center. We have  produced embryos from 24 donor heifers and cows so far, this year.

In the additional space of the building, there will soon be possibility for donor and recipient housing.

Vilma and her progenies

Vilma and her progenies

How will a top genetic cow have as many offspring as possible?

Milkmen Ltd.’s 5140 Vilma (Denver) was ranked the best in her age group in Europe in October 2016 with 2807 gTPI, following a genetic evaluation.

The management of the company decided not to sell the animal, which was only a few months old at the time.

Since June 2017, Embrió Ltd. has been continuously implementing classical embryo transfer programs with this heifer. During the programs the managing director always paired the bulls with the genetics he considered most suitable with Vilma. We used the semen of 7 several bulls for the ET programs.

As a result of the programs of the last 22 months, there are currently 28 offspring was born from Vilma, 2 of them in Italy, and a few more embryos are waiting in the container for transfer them into recipient animals.

Among her offsprings, a heifer after Humblekind , well ahead of her mother, took the first place of the European Top List by 2897 gTPI in February 2019. She was already the first in Hungary who sold at an auction in Germany.

89 embryos from the same donor

89 embryos from the same donor

The team of Embriobos Ltd. in cooperation with Embrió Ltd. has set a new record in the Hungarian cattle embryo production in 2019.

János Barabás Hungarian beef cattle Gray breeder imported 9 Murray Grey cows and heifers from England (Oakley Murray Greys) in 2019. He sent some of them in the ET Center in Martonvásár. Gyula Gyulay and László Volman, the vets of the Embriobos and Embrió Ltd was fluhing 53 embryos in the fist round from the UK741031400368 (x Bottlesford KUDOS KPN K18). 50 of them were freezable quality (1st and 2nd class). This donor was flushed twice more times and gave an additional 9 and 27 embryos in the same year. These 89 embryos are now the Hungarian record. The embryo programs were followed the traditional MOET protocol.

Many of this and other Murray Grey embryos were transfered to the recipients of János Barabás in Görbeháza resulted 40% pregnancy rate. To use the embryo transfer programs numerous MG calf was born there in 2020.

He also imported 138 top-genetics MG embryos from Australia (Wallawong Premium Beef), which were mostly transfered by Volman and Gyulay doctors during 2020. 12 calf from this embryos have alredy been born.
